Sustainably-made architecture

Our WCafé is sustainably made, down to the detail. Some of our walls and ceilings have been made from renewable Hempcrete, and all the timber comes from responsibly cleared alien trees.

Ngwenya glass

The handcrafted vases you'll see around WCafé Waterstone are skillfully made by Ngwenya Glass. Since 1987, they've been creating stunning glassware in Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, using 100% recycled glass. Each piece is handmade and mouth-blown from clear glass bottles and jars which are collected by locals looking to earn a living and keep their area clean. Ngwenya Glass cares deeply about the community and environment; they run clean-up days along the roads in their area. Ngwenya Glass encourages local schools and their community to also get involved in clean-ups and helps educate them on the importance of a clean environment. In recognition of this Ngwenya Glass has built ablution blocks at local clinics, helped support schools and orphanages in various ways. Over 20 years ago they established The Ngwenya Elephant and Rhino fund, now run by Big Game Parks Eswatini which has helped almost eradicate poaching in Eswatini.

Mo's Crib

Founded in Pretoria, Mo's Crib is a haven of artistry and craftsmanship. Skilled artisans hand weave decorative baskets from upcycled, durable materials. Each basket tells a tale of tradition and sustainability, emboyding Mo's Crib's commitment to reducing waste. These captivating baskets, seen around WCafé Waterstone, showcase the brand's expertise in transforming recycled PVC waterpipes into stunning creations, preventing plastic pollution and promoting responsible upcycling. Meticulously collecting from landfills and construction sites, Mo's Crib breathes new life into overlooked resources. But the artistry of Mo's Crib doesn't stop there. They also weave striking baskets from banana bark, sourced from discarded banana leaves. These dead bark and leaves are transformed into beautiful, versatile baskets, offering an eco-friendly solution to storage needs. With each basket meticulously crafted, Mo's Crib combines traditional techniques with innovative design, creating unique pieces that tell a story of sustainability. Embrace the artistry of Mo's Crib and be part of the movement to reduce waste and celebrate the beauty that can arise from responsible upcycling.

Prêt-á-Pot

By choosing local, handmade goods, we're also choosing to honour our local talent, create jobs, and reduce our carbon footprint. We work hard to support our artisans in living sustainable lifestyles. That's why we insist on carefully choosing where we source our materials, designing with intention, and contributing towards creating a sustainable work environment for our suppliers. Everything you order is served in handcrafted ceramicware, specially curated for Woolworths. Since 1985, Prêt-á-Pot has drawn inspiration from nature to create beautiful and functional ceramic ranges made using a combination of contemporary style with old-school techniques. The Hand Crafted range, designed by Nicole Kingston and made in their Port Elizabeth studio, is skilfully crafted using 3 different locally sourced clays. Each one-of-a-kind piece is cared for by at least 6 Prêt-á-Pot staff members, who each leave their mark on the product you see on the table, on the shelf at Woolies, or decorating WCafé Waterstone.
